Every year on 3 November, the United Arab Emirates comes together for one shared moment. At 11 am, ministries, government entities, schools, companies and homes across all seven emirates raise the national flag at the same time. UAE Flag Day is a celebration of unity, pride and loyalty to the nation, and a reminder of the values the flag has represented since the country was founded in 1971. Here is a look at the history of Flag Day, the story of the flag itself and how the nation marks the occasion.
What Is UAE Flag Day?
UAE Flag Day is an annual national occasion on which citizens and residents raise the UAE flag together as a symbol of unity and allegiance to the country. It was announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on 11 December 2012, and the first Flag Day was celebrated in 2013. Since then, it has become one of the most visible national moments of the year, with flags lining streets, buildings and offices throughout November and into National Day celebrations in December.
Why Is Flag Day Celebrated on 3 November?
The date marks the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan becoming the second President of the UAE in 2004. Flag Day honours his legacy and the continuity of the union built by the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the founding Rulers of the Emirates.
What Is the Story Behind the UAE Flag?
The UAE flag was designed by Abdulla Mohammed Al Ma’aina, a young Emirati who was 19 years old when he entered a national competition to design the flag of the new state. His design was selected to represent the new nation. On 2 December 1971, the day the United Arab Emirates was formed, the flag was raised for the first time by Sheikh Zayed at Union House in Dubai.
More than five decades later, that same flag flies over every government building, embassy and landmark of the country, and at the centre of every Flag Day celebration.
What Do the Colours of the UAE Flag Mean?
The flag carries four colours, each with its own meaning:
- Red: courage, bravery and the sacrifices of earlier generations
- Green: growth, prosperity and the nation’s development
- White: peace, goodness and generosity
- Black: strength and the rejection of injustice and extremism
Together, they reflect the values that the UAE was built on and continues to stand for: unity, progress, peace and resilience.

How Is Flag Day Celebrated Across the UAE?
At 11 am on 3 November, government entities, schools, private companies and residents raise the flag at the same moment, often accompanied by the national anthem. Celebrations typically include:
- Flag-raising ceremonies at offices, schools, universities and public buildings
- Homes, cars and buildings decorated with the national flag
- Community events and gatherings that bring citizens and residents together
- Social media posts sharing pride and gratitude for the nation
For many residents, Flag Day is also the start of the national season that leads to Commemoration Day on 30 November and UAE National Day (Eid Al Etihad) on 2 December.
How Should the UAE Flag Be Displayed?
The flag is a national symbol and should always be treated with respect. When taking part in Flag Day:
- Make sure the flag is clean and in good condition, without tears or fading
- Never let the flag touch the ground
- Raise the flag fully to the top of the pole, unless an official instruction says otherwise
- Follow any official guidelines issued by the relevant authorities on displaying the flag
